Our History

After receiving an MA in Mathematics and a BA in both Philosophy and Mathematics, Adam Barker-Hoyt was ready for something more.  No longer interested in continuing a teaching career at the university level, and unwilling to leave the state for a PhD in Mathematics, Adam wanted to bring his considerable skills to bear against the problems facing Mainers today.  Specifically, in the areas of environmental protection, energy stability, and economic growth.
Adam consulted with Mick Peterson, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at UMO.  Mick directed Adam to Jim LaBrecque, the premiere expert in heat pump technology in Maine.  With over forty years of experience, Jim was also technical adviser on energy to Governor LePage. After running through the numbers, the logical conclusion was that here in Maine, heat pumps were our “best stepping stone” to reducing dependency on fossil fuels immediately, which in-turn would decrease CO2 emissions for homeowners.

With Jim's support, Adam started Maine Alternative Comfort in 2011.  Legendary Professor, Dick Hill, was Maine Alternative Comfort's very first install.

In 2016 Maine Alternative Comfort changed its name to the more succinct “MAC Heat Pumps”.

Since then, MAC has installed thousands of heat pumps across the state in both commercial and residential settings. A continuing commitment to customer satisfaction and environmental impact has helped ensure MAC's position as Maine's leader in customer education, heat pump installation, and service after the sale.
